Zechs Marquise: Violitionist Sessions 3 Questions, Live Tracks Free DL and Videos

ONE: What is the music climate like right now in El Paso, Texas?

Marfred Rodriguez Lopez: I guess it’s random, really.

Matthew Wilkson: It’s super random.

Marcos Smith: There’s definitely not one genre that’s huge right now in El Paso. There’s a couple of venues coming up, so that’s good, but for the most part, it’s not like it’s all rock bands or all hip hop, it’s just a bunch of different…

Marcel Rodriguez Lopez: I think for the first time in, I don’t know, five-plus years there’s two solid places to play on our side of town. We don’t know about the other side of town. We don’t ever go over there.

Best New Bands: Live Review of Zechs Marquise at Glasslands

…This show was also another confirmation of how Maps & Atlases have great taste in the supporting bands they bring on tour with them. Sister Crayon, opened, and then there was El Paso psych funk band Zechs Marquise. The core of this band is a trio of brothers; Marcel Rodriguez-Lopez, Marfred Rodriguez-Lopez, and Rikardo Rodriguez-Lopez, who also happen to have another brother by the name of Omar Rodriguez-Lopez, who you may have heard of in relation to The Mars Volta. Drummer Marcel wasn’t at this show, but the drummer that played with them held it down with percussive stealth, not to mention his beard almost passing for a 6th member of the band.

Regardless of the band’s hairy prowess and higher profile relations, they really brought out some jams, and they brought it hard. They describe their sound as being funk from the future, and if the future of funk is a much heavier, blown out, almost hardcore funk, then that description is pretty accurate. Also, the fact that they’re on Sargent House with the likes of Tera Melos and Chelsea Wolfe makes total sense. Minutes after their set, tweets started popping up in the feed about the band’s impressive set. I think Zechs blew some people’s minds that night.

Zechs Marquise has just announced summer tour dates with And So I Watch You From Afar, so kids across the nation will be able to have their ears blown proper. ” - read the Full show Review by Kelly Knapp

It’s the return of American label Sargent House‘s podcast presented by 2XM’s Niahm Hegarty. Zechs Marquise Interview/Show Review - Red 7 Austin, TX

Last summer I had the privilege of seeing Zechs Marquise in their infancy. The show was expansive, proggy, and thought provoking. The crowd was interested, but to say blood and fists were pumping would be a stretch. This past Monday, Zech’s opened for At the Drive In and their new material has lifted their live show to a completely new height. To say it’s simply the new material would be insufficient. The band’s whole energy has found a new plane. Zechs played with a new found confidence that amped the already bristling crowd. Marfred Rodriguez-Lopez (bass) mentioned toward the end of their set that the audience was most likely charged because of the first At the Drive In show in more than a decade, which was minutes away. However, this was a dose of misguided self criticism. Openers for big shows are never guaranteed an electric show, but the crowd got behind Zechs Marquise in a big way.

Most in attendance were not expecting much from a group many viewed to be simply the band with a bunch of Omar Rodriguez-Lopez’s (The Mars Volta, At the Drive In, etc.) little brothers. Of those around me in the crowd, nearly every person commented on Zechs with delighted surprise. A couple of guys next to me kept saying, “What the fuck! This is amazing!”. Zechs’ jazzy groove-prog hooks grabbed the crowd, and their energy shook them until their legs were convinced that it was, in fact, okay to dance at a prog show.

Zech’s entire persona has evolved. This time last year, Marfred’s show presence was that of a down home musician, happy to be able to play in front of a pumped crowd. This time around, Zechs knows they deserve to kill it. Moreso, Zechs’ live performance was a pleasant, heavy-as-shit, hip-checking, surprise. Getting Paid certainly upped ZM’s game in terms of what they could do with a crowd, but that’s far from the whole story. In every aspect, Zech’s live show has been upped. Marcos and Matt on guitar are exponentially more potent, Marfred’s bass finds a more visceral groove, Marcel on drums allows for breath-stealing rhythmic tricks with mathy precision, and Rikardo’s synth finds a sick pocket to work within. Honestly, they sound like a completely new band. A band that knows they belong at the front of a crowd, being part of a new generation of prog rockers who’ve figured out how to get prog lovers to shake their ass to a bass line.

This Is Not A Scene, It’s A Review of Zechs Marquise “Getting Paid”

One cursory glance at the cover of the latest album, Getting Paid by El Paso based Zechs Marquise would lead the listener to believe they were about to listen to an album of intense bass laden funk or an album of children’s songs by the Animal Kwackers. Three of the band members are brothers Marcel, Marfred and Rikardo Rodriguez-Lopez, who are brothers of The Mars Volta’s Omar, so a certain rich family heritage in progressive music may be apparent from the offset. The production is razor sharp as is befitting an album that is both technically proficient and intricate, as it is soulful and, yes, funky as hell.

The title track, and opening piece ‘Getting Paid’ starts with an echo which is reminiscent of any number of electronic synthesiser tunes, before the funk encumbered bass pushes any belief of that aside to make way for a mathematically complex series of riffs and phrases which mark out the characteristics of this album early on. ‘Lock Jaw Night Vision’ retains the qualities of the previous track, but is somehow also infused with further levels of energy, exhilaration and haste which give it a need to sweep the funk to one side. There are any number of tempo and mood changes within its’ 5 short minutes to bewilder the first time listener.
